1 June 2004

Dear CSA Members,

Welcome to our CSA program! Our first delivery date this season will be Thursday, June 10th, a full two weeks earlier than last year. Specific drop site locations and schedules are available for current members; please contact us. First, I will take a few minutes to tell you what’s happening at the farm.

The peas enjoyed a mild and accommodating spring, and as a result, we have the best crop in years. The shell and snow peas already have pods and should be ripe and ready for our first delivery. Beets are big and abundant, carrots are sizing up nicely, and the brunia lettuce, along with other spring greens, have provided us with tasty salads for weeks.

We are trialing a new variety of radish this year that has already proved popular with our market customers. Shunkyo, a Chinese radish type, has long, hot pink roots and a touch of spice and sweetness.

A host of other new crops is on the agenda, including several spring treats. The most exciting is our first crop of organic Strawberries (!!) that I cannot manage to leave alone in the field. Specialty greens like Mizuna and Arugula are up and coming, and we have new varieties of tomatoes and eggplant to try. Another first this season is Lilies. We are trialing three varieties; if the sun stays in our favor, thousands of blossoms will grace our fields.

Of course, all of our favorites will be present this year as well. The onions got a strong start and we have high hopes for their performance. We also have a bumper crop of green beans and edamame on their way, and the perennial herbs we planted last spring will be established and harvestable this season. The garlic is forming bulbs and will pop up flower heads shortly. In all, the plants are healthy and strong, and we anticipate an outstanding season.

We want to thank all our returning members for your continued support. Our farm is really shaping up and looks better every day. A giant thank you also to our new members, whose enthusiasm is greatly appreciated.

We look forward to getting started!

Thank you,
Heidi
